Help w/ Jet ski electrical problem (96 KAW ZXI 900)?
Okay, so I have a 96 zxi 900 that has no power (no lights, no gauges, completely dead) I bought a new battery and now I am not sure where to start. I believe unit has been submerged before and we replaced the whole ebox. The “new” ebox is used as well, but didn’t show any signs of water damage. The wires to the voltage regulator did look fried, so I swapped those out. Could a bad volt reg be giving me this? I was thinking it might be the magnetic ignition switch, or maybe the trim box? I really have no clue to be honest. I do have a volt tester, so where do I start? Is it red to red/white to bypass that switch? How would I test the trim box? What other places might be the culprit here?? ANY help on this is greatly appreciated. Please be as thorough with me as possible, as this is my first pwc to work on. I would like to take the volt meter to it, but I honestly don’t know which wires to test. Thanks guys!
Well the first place to check is the battery. With the volt meter check to see if you have 12 volts across the battery. If the voltage is there next check from the positive terminal to the block of the engine or the starter. The metal parts of the engine are typically tied to the negative terminal of the battery. If you still measure 12V here, now it’s time to attach the negative lead of the voltmeter to the negative terminal of the battery, or the metal of the engine as confirmed in the last step. Now using the positive lead from the meter you want to trace the 12V from the battery to the ignition switch and see that it’s getting there. Then you want to trace across the switch in the on position and learn where the circuit is being interrupted. The voltage regulator shouldn’t be your problem since it really only comes into play when the engine is running. It’s purpose is to regulate the voltage used to recharge the battery.
This is only a start for trouble shooting this problem, but due to your lack of experience in this kind of problem, I really think you’d be better off bringing it into a repair shop for a detailed estimate about how much it will cost to repair this ski.
